How To Find Happiness When You Are Depressed

When you face a series of setbacks, disappointments, heartaches, and failures, especially when they happen in a short period, you can get depressed, and find it hard to pick yourself up again.

It does not mean you are weak.

It does not mean you are a failure. It is all part of being a human.

In uphill struggles, it is easy to be running out of fuel to keep going.

There might be days you find it hard to fall asleep, and harder to get out of bed.

There might be days when you just want to be away from it all.

There might be days when you find yourself not being able to do anything, even if you want to do everything.

There might be days you consider giving up, your dreams, your goals and whatever you set out to do.

Feeling depressed can take a toll on your health and interferes your ability to accomplish stuff.

The tricky part is that it is a vicious cycle. Thoughts, emotions, and behaviors affect one another.

Sad thoughts make you feel down. When you feel sad, you cannot find the motivation and energy to do things that uplift you.

Depressive thinking leads to unhappy emotions, the feelings that make you want to withdraw to your own world. It inevitably causes you to lose confidence in your abilities, and this resulting behavior again enforces the negative thoughts.

If you are feeling down, you need to take action to break the vicious cycle. These are some of the things that might work well for you:

1. Write

Putting it on paper helps you to brain dump instead of ruminating. Writing helps to give you clarity.

  • What is bothering you?
  • What is the problem?
  • What happened?
  • What are your feelings about the situation?
  • How did you cope?

Feelings are neither wrong nor right. They are just feelings, and they belong to you. Writing down your feelings and the situation helps you to gain a clearer perspective. Having clarity gives you the power to overcome challenges.

2. Make Your Bed Every Morning

Making your bed can lower stress. It is a small habit but it has mighty effects in helping you to create a positive state of mind. It gives you an instant good feeling of accomplishment. You will feel more ready to take on the rest of your day.

3. Get Active

It is easy to reject exercise because it seems too difficult, especially if you have been leading a sedentary lifestyle. Exercising energizes you if you often feel fatigued. It increases the feel-good chemicals in your brain.

Being active regularly helps to boost your self-esteem. There are many free workout videos on YouTube that you can follow from the comfort of your home.

Taking a brisk walk around your neighborhood or at the park will help clear your mind and make you feel better.

4. Listen to Music

Music and favorite songs can soothe your soul. Music can help you to let go of suppressed feelings. Sometimes you cannot find the right words for your situations. Music therapy & singing can encourage you to express your emotions.

5. Talk to someone you trust

A problem shared is a problem halved. Talk to someone who is a good listener and trustworthy. Sometimes feeling understood by someone is just what you need.

6. Mindfulness

Take a look at where you are now. Listen to your surroundings. Observe what is happening around you. Don’t lose your present moments ruminating about the past and worrying about the future.

Holding on to past issues prevent you from experiencing the joys of today.

If you find it hard to focus on the present moment, try coloring. It can be an active form of meditation. Colouring helps you to focus and let go while exploring your creativity.

7. Acceptance

Most people are unhappy because things are not the way they want them to be.

Acceptance is not about resigning yourself to a life of misery. It is about empowering yourself to make choices and take actions based on truth.

When you are unable to let go, it makes you sad, bitter and resentful.

Your feelings and thoughts about the past matter more than what actually happened. Don’t stay stuck in a history you cannot change.

Accept things as they are, accept circumstances as they come. Acceptance is not necessarily easy, but life is a learning journey.

Learn to love things, even if they are not perfect. Be at peace with who you are. And know that you are valuable even if you fail or make a mistake. You are enough.

8. Find Happiness Through Gratitude

Being grateful boosts your happiness. When you savor the magic of moments and good things in your life, you attract more naturally. Gratitude helps you to cope with trauma and distress.

Sometimes we forget how much people have done for us that we focus only on disappointments and failures, which make us so unhappy. When you are grateful, it is hard to feel resentful.

Experience the joy of appreciating what you have.

9. Using Your Imagination

Instead of giving attention to what is making you depressed, visualize something that will make you feel good. Within our imagination, anything is possible.

Picture yourself experiencing good health, fulfilling relationships, financial abundance and whatever that you desire.

In your mind, build your dream home, create ideal friendships, a wonderful vacation, being in paradise.

The power of imagination sets your energy in motion. Your imagination and thoughts create your future and make dreams possible.

When you remove yourself from current negative circumstances & thinking, focusing on positive thoughts (even if they are imaginary), you are using your energy to feel good instead of thinking what depresses you.

The problems may still be there, but feeling good will motivate you to find solutions. Feeling good helps to manifest positive results magically, through the Law of Attraction.

Life happens and takes us where it wants to. We can make a choice to steer life towards being happy, but we do not control happiness.

When we fight our own thoughts and emotions, we lose our inner peace and joy.

You are not your thoughts and feelings, look at them for what they are. It’s just part of who you are; it’s all part of being human.

Sometimes struggles in life are meant to help you grow.

When you look back at your life, you might find that some of the worst things that happened have turned out to be blessings down the road.

Our challenges and adversities can be the greatest & most important life lessons to shape our greatness and find our purpose in life.

Take the time you need to find happiness and joy within yourself.
